Auburn coach Bryan Harsin is speaking to the media on the eve of the start of preseason practice. Click refresh, will continue to update...
** We're back. Good to see guys back in the complex. Strength staff did a great job this summer getting team ready. Guys made good progress. Team meeting tonight. First of 25 practices tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
** Every guy wants to play and contribute. They're all going to get their opportunities to show what they can do in camp. They guys that show they can do it, earn it, will get more reps and move up. Competition creates depth and helps us find role guys too.
** On Texas and Oklahoma coming to SEC: Right now not my biggest concern. That is big news. It says a lot about the SEC. You've got two really good programs. Was at Texas and played against Oklahoma. We're going to welcome them in. We'll see them on the recruiting trail and it will make the SEC better when we compete against them.
** Scrimmage in practice eight and everything leading up to that will be good on good. Want to be physical but there are new rules about certain drills and how many shell practices they have to have. This is a physical game, a big part of this game is toughness and we have to create that in practice while we're getting players fresh and ready for first game.
** On LT and RT competitions: "I'll be watching them." Will have a lot of guys on OL cross-training at OG and OT. Will move guys around, which will help us develop. Mentioned Council could get look at tackle but no specifics.
** Got to see some of the new guys early and see where they're at and their intention from practice to practice. Things pick up fast in fall camp and even more in game week. Who can retain and execute will be important. Looking at a lot of guys in return game.
** Demetris Robertson is not going to be here today but is very close. He's finishing up things academically. Hope to have him at tomorrow's practice. He's been working hard and staying on top of it. Want to get him here and started as fast as possible.
** Jarquez has had a very good summer. He's inexperienced but tough and works hard. Has all the qualities you want in a young RB. Tank and Shivers excelled this summer, stepped up and worked well together. Got to have depth at RB. Jordan Ingram in there to compete too.
** Have had a lot of really good conversations with Coach Bobo during the summer about philosophies and the progression of teaching particular plays. Whole staff is contributing as they take a blend of things and put it together to create something new, the Auburn offense.
** The people of Auburn has been the biggest surprise in a good way of the last 8 months as the AU head coach.
** Going to be doing things in camp and into season with masks and complying with COVID guidelines. Want to put us in best position to be successful. Have improved vaccinations. Fully expecting to be able to take part in all the Auburn traditions: Tiger Walk, rolling Toomer's, etc.
** Expect all the transfers to play. They're coming in to compete and play. The portal is something everyone will continue to use. Key for transfer portal is finding right players, right fit. Players need to know that schools have a finite number of spots available to bring in transfers.
** Need consistency from WRs everyday. They run more than anyone. They have to have their minds right. The details they take from meetings and applying it on field and reviewing afterwards is important. Have to be a student of the game. The really good WRs are very consistent when it comes to getting lined up, get off and running routes.
** Council won't be limited at practice but hasn't had the reps as others. Have to allow him to build back up. It'll be based on how he feels and his recovery time after each practice.
