INDIANAPOLIS – Auburn’s Johni Broome was honored by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) as one of five Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week for games played through Sunday, Feb. 4.

The reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, Broome averaged 15.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 blocks in wins over Vanderbilt and Ole Miss to put the Tigers at 18-4 overall and 7-2 in league play. They are currently ranked No. 12 and No. 11 in this week’s Associated Press and ESPN Coaches Top 25 Polls.

He is just the second men’s basketball player ever from Auburn to be named National Player of the Week next to All-American and NBA First Round draft pick Walker Kessler in 2022.

The 6-10, 240-pound junior forward/center from Plant City, Fla., recorded his 55th career double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots against the Commodores. He also recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, a career-high seven assists and three blocks to hand the Rebels their first home loss of the season.

Broome is currently on a 13-game double-digit scoring streak including five double-double performances in that stretch. He currently ranks eighth in the league in scoring, first in rebounding (8.8), second in field goal percentage (56.3%) and second in blocks per game (2.3).

For the 2023-24 season, the USBWA has expanded its national player of the week program that has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season. In past seasons, the USBWA has recognized just one player each week.

Each Tuesday during the regular season, designated USBWA board members will select five standouts from the 32 NCAA Division I conference players of the week to be recognized.

Broome was selected this week along with Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson (Big 12), Xavier’s Quincy Olivari (BIG EAST), Boise State’s Max Rice (Mountain West) and Hofstra’s Tyler Thomas (CAA).
