INDIANAPOLIS – For the second time of his career, senior All-American and National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome (Plant City, Fla.) was honored as one of five U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week for games of the week ending Sunday, Dec. 1.

For the 2024-25 season, the USBWA continues its national player of the week program that has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season.

The 6-10, 240-pound senior from Plant City, Fla., averaged 21.7 points, 15 rebounds, 4.3 assists and three blocks in wins over No. 5 Iowa State, No. 12 North Carolina and Memphis as he was named the MVP of the Maui Invitational in leading the Tigers to the tournament title. He recorded his fifth straight double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds to go with six assists, four blocks and a steal versus Memphis in the championship game.

Broome was joined by Chucky Hepburn of Louisville (ACC), Tyrese Hunter of Memphis (AAC), Trey Kaufman-Renn of Purdue (Bi Ten) and Javon Small of West Virginia (Big 12).

He led Auburn to a 3-0 week and the program’s first Maui Invitational title with dominating wins over No. 5 Iowa State (W, 83-81), No. 12 North Carolina (W, 85-72) and Memphis (W, 90-76).

Broome recorded his fifth-straight double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds to go with six assists, four blocks and a steal versus Memphis in the championship game. He secured his 65th career double-double in the first half, making it the second-straight game he has posted a double-double in the first half with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists, three blocks and a steal before halftime.

Broome was previously the USBWA National Player of the Week on Feb. 5, 2024. He is the second-ever player in program history next to Walker Kessler to be honored with the national weekly award and only to ever receive it twice.
