But to act like HIS in-game decision making is the reason we lost that game is ignorant.
Kevin Steele was out coached by Steve Ensminger. Blame the refs if you want, but we let a bad LSU offense score 22 points on us at home.
Joe Borrow outplayed Jarrett Stidham. And it wasn’t just because of play calling. Bad play calls didn’t cause Stidham to throw those interceptions. Bad playcalls didn’t cause Stidham to overthrow open receivers deep.
As for the choice to go for it... hindsight is 20/20 and it sounds great now to talk about how you would have kicked the FG, but Gus knew TDs were going to be at a premium in this game and we had the ball at the 15 yardline and needed to get a yard to give us 4 more shots at the end zone. I don’t like the playcall and wish Stidham would have identified that we lost the numbers game up front and the play was doomed pre-snap. He didn’t, or didn’t do anything about it if he did, and the rest is history.
That didn’t cost us though... we had a 14-10 lead at the half and a 21-10 lead late in the 3rd quarter. After their FG Stidham throws a terrible pick and gives them the ball at mid field, flipping crucial field position. That lost field position is exactly why our next drive went 55 Yards but still left us with a 52 yard FG. Giving up a 1 play 71 yard TD pass in a game that both teams struggle to sustain drives was killer, but we still had the lead. Watching them work their way down the field, penalties or not, was gut wrenching. Not nearly enough pressure from our DLine and a secondary that wasn’t able to make a play without getting flagged.
We lost the turnover battle 0-2. We had more penalty yardage. We gave up big plays without getting any ourselves. We put up 21 points on a really good defense with absolutely NO short fields, a missed FG, and a turnover on downs in the red zone. In the list of reasons we lost that game, the offensive game plan and Gus’ decision making are far down the list behind plenty of other people that should be taking the heat but who are Bunker favorites (Stidham and Steele).
