The shooting happened that Sunday night after Birmingham 911 received a call from a third-party alerting police to a domestic disturbance inside of the vehicle in north Birmingham, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Dispatchers obtained the location and description of the vehicle, and provided that information to officers.
North Precinct officers spotted the vehicle in the 300 block of Ninth Avenue West. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle; the driver – later identified as Ray - refused to stop, police said. The vehicle then came to a rest in the 200 block of Ninth Avenue West after crashing into a fence.
Fitzgerald said Ray exited the vehicle brandishing a gun. An officer then fired, striking the Ray.
