The takeaway will be that an undermanned, undersized, gassed team shot poorly amidst their limp to the finish, but I didn't see that. There's truth there, but ultimately we're a one-dimensional team when it comes to victory. We MUST shoot well and hope our opponent turns it over. Didn't happen.
Couple thoughts:
- Defense was truly atrocious. We couldn't guard them, nor could we find their shooters in transition. That's why we lost. Can't give up 52 points in the first half and expect to come back. The first 3 minutes of the 2nd half were as poor a defensive performance as I've seen all year.
- We can play and play well with 8 men. Lots of teams have 8-man rotations. But having no 9th or 10th man is huge because Spencer, somehow as a Junior, has not yet learned how to defend without fouling. Unacceptable for a junior to have such a poor understanding of game context. He better bring it this offseason of he'll be our 11th man next year.
- Brown will get his shot back, but right now he's forcing his shot, dribble, and pass, and its killing our offense. He's gone a bit selfish on O and its impacted his D. That foul 80ft away from the basket with 3 minutes left is indicative of his mindset --self-absorbed.
- Murray isn't bringing much to the table at the moment and is why we're seeing Okeke/Spencer even Dunbar/Okeke rotations at the 4/5. He's got to improve his touch around the rim and quit forcing things.
- Heron should be 1st team SEC. Loved his heart and his game tonight. Don't hold the missed dunk against him. Let's hope he returns next year. People are underestimating how much he'll be missed.
Sat will tell us where this team is. Arkansas is a talented senior-laden team with a lottery pick at center. South Carolina is not. We should win. There's still enough talent and drive on this team to make a 2nd weekend run, but it all depends on our attitude and how we close!
