I’ve had some questions on this topic recently, so I thought I’d do a quick breakdown on where we stand from a scholarship standpoint of our total 85 limit and the total number of scholarships available in the 2022 class.
Currently we have 82 scholarships accounted for (including Demetrius Robertson) against our total 85 player cap. That means we could take up to 3 more transfers that are in the transfer portal if we do chose to, though I think at most we’d take probably 1-2 more max, and maybe put 1 or 2 walk-ons on scholarship that have been on the roster for two plus years so that they won’t count as an initial counter, and would instead just count against the total 85 player limit (that rules out guys like Caylin Newton, Nick Curtis, Trey Elston, etc).
Now onto scholarships available, we signed 19 HS and Juco players in the 2021 class (this also includes Kamal Haddan and Hal Presley who have since entered the portal), had 1 blue shirt player in P Oscar Chapman that counts against 2021 numbers, and signed 4 grad transfers with 1 year of eligibility left (Fair, Knighten, Robertson, Miller - technically 2 but he’s only staying for 1). We also signed Grant Calcaterra who counts against our 25 man class in 2021, though because he never enrolled we get his scholarship back in the 2022 class.
So that brings us to the 2022 class. With 26 scholarships available, we currently have 5 transfers that are counting against our 2022 numbers (RB Jordon Ingram, QB TJ Finely, DL Marcus Harris, DB Donovan Kauffman, and Edge Eku Leota), so we have 21 scholarships left to give in the 2022 class. I suspect we will sign anywhere between 15 - 18 HS or Juco prospects in this class (though that number could rise if Harsin and crew are able to land the guys they want on our board), and back fill with quality transfers from the portal for the remaining spots.
As far as position numbers are concerned in this upcoming class, this is what my intel is telling me as of now, and remember these numbers can come from the HS ranks, Junior College, or the portal so we are not locked into any one way as to how to fill these spots.
QB: 1-2
RB: 2
WR: 2-3
OL: 3-4
TE: 1
DL: 3-4
Edge: 1-2
LB: 2-3
DB: 5
K: 1
Got some down time right now, some I’m glad to answer any questions anyone has on recruiting or roster management.
