AU starting QB and the backup (question)

can someone explain John Franklin backing up Sean White and Malik Willis backing up Stidham?

It seems normal at AU for the starter and the backup to not share a skill set that is remotely consistent with the starter.

Anyone have any insight as to the strategy?
