Been watching this excellent 6 part series on Smithsonian and it just is mind blowing how many died in WWII. It released in 2009, but well worth a watch is you want some history lessons.
I was stationed in Germany (Army) in the mid 80's. Forty years prior to me being there, my Dad was there and he and 30 others were captured by the Germans and held for 6 months. He spent time in several different Stalag's but as the Russians advanced into Germany, their German guards just abandoned them. They were free but nowhere close to the American front. The Russians they encountered had to be convinced they were Americans and not Germans. They eventually did make it back to freedom and he lived to be 80 but had emotional scars from the experience.
We take so much for granted.
Happy 4th Bunk!
