Press release...
Right-handed pitcher Andreas Alvarez has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week after his pair of relief appearances in wins last week, the league office announced Monday.
It marks the third time through five weeks this season that an Auburn freshman has earned the distinction. Bub Terrell and Chris Rembert also received the recognition on Feb. 24 and Mar. 3.
After making midweek starts the first three weeks of the season, Alvarez was moved to a relief role to open SEC play and turned in a combined 6.0 scoreless innings in wins against UT Martin and No. 13 Vanderbilt. He faced just one batter over the minimum in his 6.0 innings of work.
Leading 6-1 vs. UT Martin Tuesday, Alvarez turned in scoreless seventh and eighth innings and faced the minimum thanks to a runner caught stealing and double play.
Five days later, he made his SEC debut against Vanderbilt and turned in 4.0 scoreless innings en route to earning his first collegiate win in the series-clincher. Alvarez faced just one batter over the minimum and retired the last eight Commodores he faced to allow for Auburn to comeback from its five-run deficit in the finale. Thirty-five of the 70 pitches he offered were for strikes, good for a 70 percent rate.
Alvarez and the No. 17 Tigers (16-4, 2-1 SEC) host Alabama State (9-12, 2-1 SWAC) Tuesday at 6 p.m. before traveling to No. 24 Kentucky (14-4, 1-2 SEC) this weekend.
