So, in traditional HS recruiting, you have a top guy on the board for each position, and work your way down as you miss. Generally speaking, the talent goes down as you move to the next person.

That's not what's happening with the portal. New guys have been popping in all along the way, and often more talented guys show up later in the process. The first guy is likely not the top guy, he's just the first guy. It's not moving to a plan B, it's often just waiting for the next plan A.

What that means is, AU doesn't have to load up on the guys that are available in the first week. They don't need to get into bidding wars over the first OT that hits the portal. Clearly new guys continued to pop up all month long.

You may not like us getting outbid for kids, but I like the idea that we're not panicking and overpaying to get an early guy. Arguably, if we don't get an LT in this round, we could drop enough $$$ to pick one up in spring.

And yes, I realize it's a little different for a QB - but the QB issue is purely a short-term issue, and only because PT underperformed much of the season.

Just pointing out that if you are viewing it as the same as HS recruiting, it's not a pure apples-to-apples comparison.
