That doesn't mean he gets a pass on OBVIOUS mistakes in roster management. He had to know fairly early that Kess and Bari were gone after one year. He had time to find some scorers. We had MAJOR issues last year with the 1 and 2 positions. They are too short to function against 6'-3"+ guards that are on most other teams. They can't even pass over them, so that completely changes the offensive scheme, such that it is. It's why we have so much trouble getting the ball into the post and have so many unforced errors. They can't pass over, and aren't quick enough to go around, the other guards.
Pearl knew our guards were not big enough, and couldn't shoot well enough, to where he had to go sign a portal PG who could shoot, and a pure shooter at the 2. He did neither. We've missed on top guards two straight years. That's on him. Just is.
His last few years at TN and every year at AU, Pearl's scheme is to pressure on D, get LOTS of turnovers/run outs, and shoot 3's. We can't do two of those. I was really struck by the game last night, when all the announcers talked about was UGA fast breaking. That USED to be all anyone said about AU. Now no one does. We used to get so many points on fast break opportunities. Not any more.
So, Pearl HAS to have a complete roster make over this coming year. Period. If he can't/won't then we would honestly have to question him. I have some faith that he knows this, especially since KD has seen greatly reduced PT lately, and Wen was basically benched last night and a couple of earlier games. Unfortunately, we simply have no other options though, so he has to trot them back out there.
This team is not going to the tourney. No way. If we are losing by double digits to that pitiful UGA team, we are not winning many more games. Hopefully that will be final push for Pearl to have a complete makeover in this team. And, IMO, while Wes F is a good coach and recruiter, with our misses the last couple of years, I think Pearl needs some new blood on the coaching staff. Especially someone that KNOWS offense. They are getting stale.
