That performance just keeps getting worse and worse. I am about as big of a Hugh Freeze guy as there is, but the product that he is putting on the field is flat out inexcusable.
We are obviously not very talented on offense, and that might be a generous way to put it, but there is no excuse for having a bottom 10 passing offense in the country (in front of a few triple option teams too so it’s really worse than that).
Hugh has made a few errors in his first season that I think have materially hurt this team. First, obviously Thorne is not what Hugh hoped he would be. He was not the first choice, or the second, or the third, but still the thought was he could run the offense fairly effectively. Thorne is not as bad as he is showing. There’s 2 years of proof to show that. I don’t know what is going on, but something is clearly not working between the marriage. I don’t see any way that we don’t go portaling for another QB this off-season.
Second, this team is just straight up poorly coached. We had 4 substitution penalties last night I think. 2 of them were horrific. 1 was the third and one after Ole Miss scored to take the lead to make it third and long, and the other was on a freaking punt that allowed Ole Miss to go for it on 4th down. Thank god we stopped them but still a horrible penalty. Don’t even get me started on the QB rotation. Hugh’s quote about it not hurting the team in the post game was sad to hear. Pick a qb and let them play. At one point Thorne was thrown into a 3rd and long on an Ashford drive and he was sacked. He came off the field and when he got to the sideline yelled “they throw me in there for every third and long I’m F-ing sick of it.” I don’t blame him tbh. In my eyes Hugh only has 2 options, either play Thorne and try and throw the ball some, or play Ashford and go borderline triple option. This qb rotation insanity HAS TO STOP.
Lastly, and this may be a bit nitpicky, but Hugh has been too public about the team and his thoughts about it. I get trying to set expectations, and some of that is fine, but we heard a lot about how badly this team lacked talent. That doesn’t do a lot for the confidence of the players on the team. The comment he made about not knowing much about the game until 30 min before kickoff….. when your team is performing as poorly as it is, you simply cannot say that out loud.
I think Hugh is the right guy, and I think he will recruit at a level that will have us competitive fairly quickly. But I think it is a mistake to totally abandon the short term for the long term. Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.
