Once he rose to the chancellorship in 1933 he was still hamstrung by the silly little laws of the German government. Immediately after the Reichstag fire he issued a decree which immediately overruled those German laws and effectively gave him unlimited power. Can you imagine that? It would be the equivalent of a sitting US president terminating the constitution.
