Hello again.

So I've been accused of lying about this Gus-Leath-Greene melodrama in an effort to generate more clicks. We don't use a clickbait model here at AuburnSports.com, so that's a moot point. We use a subscription model, which rewards us for long-term interest/excellence. In my view, reporting on a melodrama that doesn't exist would be very bad for business since that sham would be proven false at some point. I'm not into that at all.

So what's actually happening?

I've mentioned this a few times. A group of influential people decided several weeks ago that Gus Malzahn no longer was fit to lead the football program. They have been working to dismiss Malzahn ever since. Their efforts are more intense now because the regular season ended Saturday with a loss in Tuscaloosa.

If Malzahn is going to get fired, the time is now.

Why aren't you hearing anything official about this? Because Auburn doesn't want the story out there for reasons anyone can understand. They're discussing this behind closed doors. Auburn leadership doesn't want you to know it's considering a change because of how it would look if Malzahn remains on as head coach in 2019. Remember how weird it was in 2004 when Tommy Tuberville returned after the failed coup involving Bobby Petrino? You may not remember, but I do. It was really uncomfortable. Allen Greene doesn't want that because football powers most of what that happens at Auburn. (Basketball has taken big steps forward, but it's still not the money-maker football is.)

The reason nothing has occurred yet is that people are still talking. This anti-Malzahn group is bending Steven Leath's ear, and possibly Greene's as well, in an attempt to influence him/them to fire Malzahn. Is it working? My sense is that their plan will fall short due to ambivalence regarding Malzahn in other corners of the Auburn Sphere of Influencers. A move like this requires several people to "sign off" (informally) on it due to the massive amount of money involved and the absolute need to have a replacement ready to go before the firing occurs.

I still see this as a 50-50 situation. I don't know how it's going to play out just yet.

We'll continue to update you as conditions merit.

Have a nice day.

MELODRAMA FAQ:
Q: Are you lying to generate clicks?
A: No, we don't use a clickbait model.

Q: Why isn't Gus fired yet?
A: Because he's still the coach.

Q: Will he be the coach next season?
A: That's still TBA; some people really want him gone.

Q: Didn't Allen Greene say Gus was safe?
A: Yes, he did that two or three weeks ago.

Q: So why are you talking about this when Greene deemed Gus safe?
A: Because he's not safe right now and I think you need to know that.

Q: Are you going to apologize to us if Gus is retained?
A: No, because what I'm telling you about the move to fire Gus is very real.

Q: Does that mean Greene lied?
A: No, it means that was his view of the truth at the moment he was asked.

Q: Might Gus be the coach next season?
A: Absolutely. It takes a lot of work, money and faith to fire a guy with six years remaining on his deal and a massive buyout.
