I watched a lot of the Liberty game yesterday. It was more interesting to me than UGA/UT mainly because more relevant to AU. I think HF did a masterful job winning against an opponent with superior talent in ways that I’m not sure LK can. He was operating with his 3rd string QB and lost his best weapon RB in Q1. He called 3 great drives and took his shots at the right time and with the right plays to get points but he didn’t take unnecessary chances or make it about him or his pretty plays or how many points after that. He saw his defense was playing terrific and he let them control the game. He did what an elite HC has to do—sense what it’s going to take that day to win.
I question whether LK can ever do that. He is a fantastic play designer and play caller but so often he seems to let his ego and the need to entertain himself with his offense cloud his judgment about overall game management. He keeps playing fast, going for 4th and medium and throwing the ball with double digit leads—almost always. He basically lost the game against us last season with 2-3 4th down turnovers when he could have punted. He showed no faith in or respect for his defense to ever get a stop. Does he want to build an elite defense? Even if he does will he let it thrive and lean on it to win a game?
