When I travel,
I’m often asked,
“Where do you live?”
I smile
and proudly reply,
“Alabama.”
They look confused
and ask,
“Why?”
Before I have time
to tell them
about Alabama’s
lush landscapes,
endless rivers, lakes,
mountains, streams,
blue skies
and sandy
beaches,
the cool carpet
of pine straw
that lines its forest floors,
the radiant sunsets,
warm sunrises,
and sweet tea,
the southern smiles
and lyrical drawl
of its good people…
They interrupt
and say, “But
you’re a writer.”
“You can live
anywhere
you want.”
I smile again,
graciously nod
and simply say,
“I know.”
That’s why
I live in Alabama.”
