I mentioned before that I grew up 2 blocks from the campus of Marshall University and eventually graduated from there. I was 11 yrs old when the plane went down on Nov. 14, 1970 that killed 75 - the football team and coaches and several prominent citizens of Huntington. My grandfather was in politics and even helped schedule many of the funerals in town. We were so close to campus that the Pikes use to borrow our bikes for Pikes Peak.
If you saw the movie, "We Are Marshall," you know Matthew McConaughey played the Herd's first coach after the crash named Jack Lengyel. In the years following the crash, wins were few and far in between.
Flash forward to this morning.
I'm sitting in Pep Boys on Hwy 280 in Hoover/B'ham and a man saw my "We Are Marshall" green ball cap. He asked me several questions about those days following the crash. He then added that he "was a fan" and that he could remember hearing the fans in Jordan-Hare stadium cheer loudly when they would give the scores that revealed that Marshall had won that day. Gave me chill bumps to think that was going on at another stadium in the years following the crash.
Go Herd & War Eagle!
