I see @WhaleDriver talk about this all the time but this article does a pretty good job at looking at all the sides to our current debt situation and what it would take to get to a balanced budget. I think we can all agree that we can trim some fat from the federal budget but that would really do very little to solve the issue.
We are on a collision course with Social Security and Medicare being a massive issue for us. I dont see how we ultimately solve the issue without making cuts to those programs or at the very least a massive change in how they operate.
Of course defense is the other big one but I dont see how we save a lot there without degrading our ability to fight wars. Seems like a bad time for that.
