ate lunch today with a lunch group I’ve been a part of for over 40 years….equally represented by 2 Auburn guys, 2 Bama guys, and 2 UT guys.
One of the Bama guys (single, never married) has watched more Alabama HS basketball over the years than anyone I know….he watched local HS regional play last night and will again tonight….he has been to every state tournament since 1968 and, well, is equally into HS football, baseball, and girls softball…
He made these comments today (well, he made a lot more but these were the 2-3 most interesting)…
1. Thinks Philon from Baker HS is the best player he’s ever seen play in the state. Best scorer, too. Takes the ball wherever he wants or needs to and scores or gets fouled at least 70% of the time, maybe more. Is deadly from 3 and can shoot accurately off the dribble or in a catch and shoot position.
Thinks he’ll give Auburn what Miller has given Alabama with the bonus of being able to create his own shot which Miller is not as capable of. Said if he has a surrounding cast as good as last years Auburn team, it will likely be Pearl’s best team.
I asked if he is a certain one and done - he said I can’t imagine he’s not.
2. R.J. Johnson is back on the Grissom team (actually played in Grissom’s last game) and will play in the game tonight against Sparkman. Doss, apparently, can work miracles…including legal system miracles.
3. The two best players around this part of the state, the kid at Westminster (who has the Gonzaga offer) is a junior and is evaluating (with his family) potentially playing his senior year at a Prep school out of state. So is the freshman at Buckhorn…. both looking to play against better completion and gain more exposure.
That’s all….for now.
Really surprised the Johnson kid is back playing basketball in time for tournament competition. So is my Bama friend….neither of us thought he’d wiggle out of the legal trouble he was in.
