86 Days of The Sopranos
Season 6A, Episode 2: Join the Club
In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 6A, Episode 2: Join the Club. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** We open with Tony dreaming. He’s at a hotel and then down at the bar waiting on someone. He calls his house and leaves a message. Now, what appears to be business man Tony is at a conference, but can’t get in because he has the wrong ID. He calls his wife, who sounds like it could be Charmaine, but definitely not Carmela. He goes back to the bar looking for his briefcase and wallet. He meets another group of salesmen including a nice-looking woman. Tony says he’s 46 and doesn’t know where he’s going. She says join the club. The two are making out in the parking lot, but she shuts it down because of the way he talked about his wife earlier. A helicopter with a bright light appears overhead and we come back to the present as Tony pulls his tubes out lying in the hospital bed.
** The doctors get Tony stabilized. Everybody is at the hospital and worried about Tony. Carmela tells them he came out of the coma briefly and we learn she’s been there for two nights straight. We also learn the bullet hit the gall bladder and pancreas (FYI: I can attest that gall bladders are useless organs). The doctor says we’re probably not looking at a good outcome. Carmela breaks down.
** Back in Tony’s dream, he’s checking into a hotel under the other guy’s name, which is Kevin Finnerty. He’s approached by two monks who are mad about a poor heating system Finnerty sold them. They scuffle. The next morning, he has to take the stairs down and trips and falls.
** Back to the present, the doctors still aren’t confident about Tony’s chances and worried about brain damage. Junior is still very confused and can’t remember shooting Tony. Silvio takes charge of the group while Tony is out. The rest of the gang is bickering over what they can do to help and how they might divide up stuff after Eugene’s death.
** Christopher runs into two of the FBI agents at a sandwich shop. They mention to Christopher about keeping an eye out for any terrorist activity.
** Carmela plays Tony some of his favorite music including American Girl by Tom Petty (a great one) and talks to him about their memories including when he used to carry her over his shoulder, which would “get me so hot down there.” She apologizes for saying he’s going to hell and insists he’s not going to die.
** Back in dreamland, Tony/Finnerty is in the hospital with a head injury. The doctor tells him he has parts of his brain that have been oxygen deprived and he has Alzheimers. Tony says he’s lost and we go back to the present.
** A.J. is having a hard time with Tony’s injuries and doesn’t want to be in his room and acts out. He eventually goes in there and talks to him about a car he wants. Later, however, he tells a comatose Tony that he’s going to get Junior for this: “You’re my dad and I’m going to put a bullet in his f-ing mummy head.”
** Carmela tells A.J. he’s helped out his family tremendously by staying with Tony overnight. He then informs her he failed out of school. Carmela: “My God, with your father in a coma.”
** Back in dreamland, Tony is in a hotel room, he picks up a phone but then puts it back down. He sees a light in the distance. We fade to black to When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die by Mimi Goese.
** While this episode didn’t win any awards, it’s considered one of the best of the series, particularly the performance by Edie Falco.
Murder count: None in episode, 42 in series
