In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 6A, Episode 11: Cold Stones. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** We open with A.J. admitting he was fired from Blockbusters three weeks ago for stealing promotional items and selling them. Tony and Carmela are pissed while A.J. keeps coming up with more and more excuses. Later that night, Carmela can’t sleep because she thinks A.J. is a complete stranger to the truth and has a “dead streak in him.”
** Meadow comes in and tells her parents she’s going to California to be with Finn, who is going back to dental school. Carmela is not thrilled, and has a look on her face like her world is falling apart. Tony just rolls over and falls asleep.
** Carmela decides she wants to go to Paris with the free trip for two she won. Tony says he can’t take a week off so she decides to take Rosalie. Tony says he’s fine with it. Tony gives her a new handbag full of cash for her trip.
** Vito just shows up as Tony is reading a paper and says he wants back in. He tells Tony he’s not gay, it was the blood pressure medicine he was taking. He says he’ll give Tony 200K to pay his way back in. Tony gets up and walks away without answering.
** Vito has dinner with his family and tells his kids he’s been away working for the CIA in Afghanistan. He tells them they have to keep it secret. Vito tells his wife that he can move back in once he hears back from Tony and it’s looking good. That night he calls Jim and tells him he couldn’t live without his kids. Jim calls BS and says he couldn’t live without the booze and gambling and mob life. Vito agrees.
** Tony meets with Phil, who’s running the N.Y. crew now. Phil is pissed about Vito and starts to threaten Tony, who just walks away. Later, a frustrated Tony tells Silvio they’ve got to take care of Vito and to have Carlo take care of it.
** While Carmela is in awe of all that Paris has to offer, Tony is getting a blowjob from one of the Bada Bing dancers while driving her home. Vito calls and Tony says he wants to meet. But when Vito gets back to his hotel, Phil and two of his guys are there. They beat Vito to death while Phil sits and watches.
** Tony and his crew learn of Vito’s murder. Tony tells Silvio this is not about Vito, it’s about him and Phil letting him know he can do what he wants to one of Tony’s captain and there’s nothing he can do about it. Instead of starting a war, Tony decides to hit Phil back financially.
** Tony tells Dr. Melfi sometimes he hates his son and wants to smash his face in. She tells him his anger toward A.J. has been building for some time. He says if Carmela let him kick A.J.’s ass like his dad kicked his, he might have grown up with some balls. She points out that the thing he resents Carmela for, protecting A.J., is the thing he wished his mother would have done for him.
** Carmela brings up Jackie Jr. while having dinner with Rosalie, which upsets her. She doesn’t understand why Carmela would bring something so morbid up at that time. It's because she's worried about A.J.
** Fat Dom, one of Phil’s guys that murdered Vito, shows up at Satriale’s to drop off some cash for Carlo and Silvio. He keeps making wisecracks about Vito and New Jersey, which prompts Silvio to hit him over the head and then jump on his back while Carlo repeatedly stabs him in the stomach with a knife.
** Tony drops by, sees the corpse on the floor, looks at Silvio and Carlo, raises his hands and just turns and walks out. He comes home to see A.J. and his friends playing video games. He tells A.J. he got him a construction job starting at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. A.J. says it’s bullshit. Tony put his hand around his neck and says he wants A.J. to do good and he loves him. A.J. can’t help but give him a smart-ass look and Tony busts out the window of A.J.’s SUV and tells him he’ll have it grinded into brillo pads if he doesn’t show up for work in the morning.
** Carmela dreams that she sees Adriana walking down a Paris street with her dog. A police officer tells Carmela someone needs to tell her friend she’s dead and Carmela wakes up.
** Carmela gets home, Vito’s kids learn from the paper their dad was gay, A.J. leaves for work, the photographer that shot Vito for the Thin Club reads about his murder in the paper and we fade to black to Home by Persephone’s Bees.
