Season 5, Episode 11: The Test Dream
In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 5, Episode 11: The Test Dream. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** We open with Tony and Valentina having sex. Afterwards, she accidentally sets her kimono on fire making eggs and arguing with Tony. She is in the hospital for second degree burns. Tony tells her he’ll take care of everything but she’s too doped up to understand.
** Tony B’s friend, Angelo, is murdered by Phil and Billy Leotardo on orders from Johnny Sack.
** Tony visits with Tony B, who seems very distracted. Tony is complaining about his housekeeper and Valentina, who he says he was going to break up with but can’t now. He tells him he’s been thinking a lot about Charmaine.
** Tony checks into a nice hotel to get some rest. He sees Dr. Melfi there. He calls Charmaine but doesn’t say anything and she hangs up. He has dinner by himself and then gets a message from Silvio saying Angelo got hit. He tries to call Tony B, but he’s not answering. He calls everybody looking for Tony B but no luck. Tony’s date from Jade escorts shows up and then we fast forward to a long dream sequence…
** Tony wakes up next to Carmine Sr., who says he’s all alone. He gets a phone call about killing a guy and then he’s speaking to Dr. Melfi but it’s really Gloria. She asks if he’s ready for what he has to do and he’s riding in a car with his dad and Big P and several other dead guys before he arrives at his house.
** Still dreaming, Tony and Carmela meet Finn’s parents, his mom is Annette Bening and dad the deceased Vin. Tony’s teeth are falling out. Tony tells Annette something bad is going to happen while Vin sings Three Times a Lady. Tony goes into the bathroom looking for a gun behind the toilet (Godfather reference). He hears gunshots and goes outside to see Tony B shooting Phil. He’s running from a mob and Artie picks him up. Tony ends up screwing Charmaine with Artie coaching him. Then he’s riding Pie-O-My and telling Carmela he wants to come home.
** Tony is back at his high school and puts a silencer on his gun. He finds his former coach, who tells him to do what he has to do. Coach calls him a dumbass and Tony tells him he should show him some respect because he’s not a kid anymore. The coach ridicules Tony, but then tells him he thought he was special and could have been a coach. Tony tries to shoot him but drops the gun and it falls apart. Tony finally wakes up.
** Christopher comes to see him at the hotel and tells him that Tony B killed Billy and injured Phil. Tony says they’re all ****ed now.
** Tony calls Carmela before dawn and wakes her up. Says he had one of his Coach Molinaro dreams. Carmela asks if he told Tony he wasn’t prepared as usual. Tony says he is sort of a coach now. They continue to chat as we fade to black to Three Times a Lady by the Commodores and Tuskegee’s own Lionel Richie.
** Up next is Long Term Parking, one of the most stunning episodes of the series.
