86 Days of The Sopranos
Season 4, Episode 13: Whitecaps

In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 4, Episode 13: Whitecaps. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…

** The Season 4 finale begins with very rough looking Carmela at the doctor’s office getting her temperature taken. We also see Christopher coming out of rehab.

** Johnny Sack is frustrated with cash flow problems and cusses at Ginny, who wants to go shopping for their trip to Italy.

** On the way back from the doctor, Tony takes a detour to the coast to show Carmela a beach house called Whitecaps he’s thinking of buying. Tony says it’s for the family and will help bring them all together as their kids continue to age.

** Back at Junior’s trial, they’ve got a hung jury but the judge gives them more time to deliberate. All the jurors are staring at the one that spoke to Bobby’s crew as the judge speaks to them.

** Carmela, who is initially against getting the beach house, wakes up Tony in the middle of the night and says she definitely wants it now. Tony goes and sees the owner and gets him to drop a previous buyer and they get the house. Tony tells Meadow she’ll inherit this. Carmela suddenly starts feeling better.

** Tony meets with Johnny Sack, who says Carmine is not letting up. Sack wants Carmine taken care of. Tony balks until Sack agrees to some very nice terms once Carmine is gone. Tony tells Christopher the plan, that it can’t look like a hit. Christopher has a couple of outside guys that he believes can take care of it.

** A drunk Irina calls Carmela and says: “I used to **** your husband.” Carmela immediately hangs up. Irina calls back and says that Tony loves her, but they share some sadness in common because Tony is now sleeping with her cousin, Svetlana. Carmela threatens to kill her if she calls again.

** A whistling Tony comes home only to be surprised by driving over his golf clubs in the driveway. He sees his clothes being thrown out the window, walks inside and gets shoeboxes thrown on top of him. Carmela: “You have made a fool of me for years with these whores. Now it’s coming to our home?” She tells him the Russian called and A.J. answered. Tony tries to tell her she’s insane, but then Carmela asks about Svetlana, which Tony denies. Carmela hits Tony, he pushes her into the wall and she tells him to get out. He says he’s not going anywhere and she pops him again. Carmela starts listing off his goomahs and he tries to bring up the money she took from bird feeder.

** A distraught Carmela again asks Tony to leave. He asks about the kids. She says it’s horrible and “God help them.” She breaks down and he walks out.

** Tony immediately goes to Irina’s house. Svetlana answers and says she’s not there. Svetlana tells Tony that she’s from a divorced family and kids lose trust after a divorce.

** Tony moves his stuff into Whitecaps, but he doesn’t officially have possession yet and the owner, Alan, asks him to move to a hotel. Tony tells him he wants out of the deal but Alan refuses to return his deposit. Tony says he’s not buying the house and walks out. After he leaves, Alan’s wife says that guy is a mobster. Alan says mobster’s conduct business too. LOL

** Johnny Sack calls Tony and says Carmine suddenly wants to settle. Tony can’t believe it and says everything is already in motion. Carmine offers to take a 20 percent cut of the HUD, Tony counters with 15 and they agree. Carmine says his son helped out a lot in the deal.

** Meadow talks to Carmela about a potential divorce and asks if it was all about Furio. Carmela says she’s never been unfaithful to Tony. Meadow runs upstairs crying.

** Johnny Sack calls Tony and still wants the hit to stay on.

** Alan, who is an attorney, calls Tony and said he’ll cancel the deal but he’s not giving back the 200K deposit. Tony mentions keeping the house and having parties until late into the night. Alan threatens legal action.

** Tony comes back and apologizes to Carmela, who tells him to get out. He says he’s not leaving. She says she’s spoken to an attorney and will get a restraining order: “I don’t love you anymore. I don’t want you. You are not sleeping in my bed, Tony. The thought of it now makes me sick.” Carmela runs upstairs crying.

** Tony sleeps on an inflatable mattress downstairs. He calls Christopher and tells him to call off the hit, and to make sure nobody talks about what they were planning.

** Christopher meets with his guys he was going to pay for the hit. He gives them half to keep it quiet. Christopher drives off and then Benny and Petey walk up and empty their guns into the two guys sitting in the car. They get the bag of money and take off. Dead men tell no tales.

** Tony and Carmela start fighting again and she tells him that for the past year she’s been fantasizing about Furio. Tells him she would look forward to Furio’s morning visits all night long next to Tony in bed. LOL Tony comes at her and reaches back to punch her but instead punches several holes in the wall. Carmela says Furio made her feel like she mattered. Tony says he likes Svetlana because she’s a real woman that’s had to overcome adversity while Carmela has sat back fiddling with the air conditioner for 20 years and bitching and complaining. Carmela: “Who knew all this time you wanted Tracy and Hepburn. Well Tony, what about the thousand other pigs you had your dick in over the years … were you best friends with all of them too? You f-ing hypocrite.” Dayum.

** The judge in Junior’s trial gets another note from the jury and says they’re deadlocked due to one juror. He calls a mistrial. Junior and his lawyer celebrate. Junior gets home with Bobby and Janice, who want to celebrate and are clearly happy together (for now). Junior can’t stand watching them and sends Bobby on an errand.

** A.J. wants to come downstairs and live with Tony. He refuses because he doesn’t want to hurt Carmela’s feelings.

** Christopher and his crew pull up a boat across from Alan’s house and start blaring Dean Martin music very loud, which disrupts a dinner party.

** Tony meets with Johnny Sack and tells him the hit is off. He tells him whacking a boss is bad for business. Sack says he’s very disappointed. He starts ranting about Carmine and his son. Tony says it’s a major step but if Sack wants to do it without him as a partner, go ahead. Sack keeps yelling at Tony, who says he still considers him a dear, dear friend. They embrace but Sack is clearly not happy and gives him a look as he drives off.

** Back home, Tony tells Carmela and the kids that it’s not a good idea for him to still live here. They’re upset. Meadow says he should go back to counseling. Carmela says he’s making the right decision. A.J. asks if they could still get back together and Tony says: “Sure, we’re still close.” Meadow doesn’t take it well.

** Tony gets his stuff and says he’ll be at the Plaza. Carmela tells him to be safe.

** Back at the beach house, the boat music has stopped so Alan and his wife go out to their deck. As soon as they sit down, the music starts right back up. Alan’s wife yells at him to let it go and give Tony his money. Alan, with his sweater draped over his shoulder, walks back in the house and shuts the windows. We fade to black as Martin sings I Love Paris (Vegas).

** The 75-minute episode is the longest of the series. James Gandolfini and Edie Falco both won Emmys for their performance in Whitecaps along with David Chase, who was one of three writers to receiver an Emmy, and director John Patterson.

Murder count: Two in episode, 30 in series
