Season 3, Episode 5: Another Toothpick
In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 3, Episode 5: Another Toothpick. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** We open with Tony and Carmela meeting with Dr. Melfi. There’s an awkward silence to start out. Carmela says Tony’s attacks make her feel concerned and helpless and a little frustrated with Dr. Melfi’s inability to help him. Tony says she has helped me. Carmela: “You’ve been coming here for three years, Tony. You still pass out on a regular basis.” Carmela gets very defensive when asked is she is aware of anything that could trigger his spells and goes off on his bad and cheating behavior. Tony: “This is f-ing ridiculous.” Carmela: “Right, just sit there. Silence, anger, then you pass out and blame the rest of the f-ing world.” Dr. Melfi: “You’re both really angry.” Tony: “Yea, you must have been at the top of your f-ing class.”
** Carmela is crying in the car on the way home, they’re still fighting and Tony is driving like a crazy person, and he gets pulled over. The cop is not having any of Tony’s BS and writes him a ticket.
** A girl tries to leave a dude and approaches a construction worker standing by his truck for a ride. The boyfriend comes up and beats the dude with a golf club. Bryan, who is in a coma, turns out to be Vito’s brother and Jackie Jr.’s cousin. Ralphie makes a couple of inappropriate jokes at his bedside in the hospital. They’re geared up for some revenge.
** Bobby’s dad has lung cancer. Janice says “another toothpick,” which pisses off Junior. Tony wants Bobby Sr. to take out Mustang Sally, who beat Bryan with the golf club. Bobby Sr. is Mustang Sally’s godfather. Bobby’s dad is played by Burt Young, who was Paulie in the Rocky movies.
** Bobby is upset about his sick father having to do a hit, complains to Junior, who tries to talk Tony out of it. Tony doesn’t back down.
** Artie, who is a little drunk, starts messing with Christopher about Adriana leaving as his hostess. He gets out of line and Christoper threatens to stab him with a fork before Tony steps in. Artie is tore up, says he loves Adriana and his wife is a c*nt.
** Bobby Sr. says he wants to do the hit. He’s been sitting on his ass for eight years and wants to feel useful. He sounds terrible and his coughing up blood, however.
** Tony runs into the cop that gave him a ticket at a local hardware store. He tells Tony he was transferred to the property room after Tony talked with his councilman. Tony feels guilty and calls the councilman back to have it reversed, but it turns out nobody at the station really liked the guy anyway according to the councilman.
** Bobby Sr. shows up where Mustang Sally is hiding out. Mustang Sally says he’ll do whatever Tony wants and Bobby Sr. said he already got him a pass. Mustang Sally is relieved until Bobby Sr. tries to shoot him from behind while he’s getting a glass of water. Mustang’s buddy walks in, Bobby Sr. just grazes Mustang and then shoots his buddy. They wrestle before Bobby Sr. manages to finish him off with a shot to the head. He then finishes off the friend.
** Bobby Sr. can barely breath but fires up a cigarette anyway. Driving home listening to America’s Sister Golden Hair, Bobby Sr. has a coughing fit, drops his inhaler, wrecks his car and dies.
** Bobby Jr. is in tears. Junior throws a fit.
** Artie and Charmaine are still fighting. He says he’s going to go into business with Tony over her wishes. She says the marriage is over and walks away.
** Junior tells Tony he has stomach cancer. Explains why he’s been so on edge this episode. Junior doesn’t want anyone else to know, makes Tony promise to keep it quiet. Tony goes home and the first thing he does is tell Janice, of all people, over the phone.
** Janice calls Junior another toothpick and Tony reminds her not to say that. She says sorry but it was what their mother would always say, and they laugh over it, both drunk.
** Carmela tells Tony that Meadow had her bike stolen by a black guy at school. Tony gives Meadow one of those grins. Tony: “A black guy. Imagine that.” Meadow: “I’m not listening to this shit.” Meadow explains to her racist father that crime is an economic issue, not racial. The FBI is listening in, which means the lamp with the bug in it is now in the kitchen. Meadow takes the lamp and storms out on her way back to school.
** Artie takes Adriana out to dinner. She thinks they’re just good friends. He tells her that he and Charmaine are spending time apart and that he’s going into business with Tony. He asks Adriana if she’s sure she’s ready for the big step of marriage and touches her hand. She pulls away and goes to the lady’s room.
** The councilor says he can help the cop get his job back but Tony says F him, c*cksucker got what he deserved.
** Junior tells Bobby he can’t go to his dad’s funeral because he has cancer. Bobby: “My father, now you, what the F is happening.”
** Tony, feeling guilty again, returns to the hardware store and offers the cop some cash, but the guy walks away and we fade to black.
