In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 3, Episode 4: Employee of the Month. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** Dr. Melfi is back with her husband and in a good mood when she sits down with Tony, who is convinced his panic attacks are over now that his mother is dead. Dr. Melfi says the conflicts that caused the panic attacks and the depression are buried deep inside him. Dr. Melfi suggests bringing Carmela to therapy, but Tony is not interested for now.
** Dr. Melfi meets with her therapist and admits she’s been charmed by a sociopath, then accidentally reveals Tony’s name to him. He says it’s time to send Tony on to a behaviorist.
** Tony pounds on Janice’s door but she’s in the basement with a metal detector. She’s still convinced Livia has hidden away riches in her house. Tony warns her not to mess with the Russians. Janice wants those records back and tells Tony she’s going back to cleaning the cellar. Tony: “Good luck finding the lost Dutchman’s gold mine, Janice.” LOL
** Jackie Jr. is having a meal with Ralphie at Artie’s restaurant. Ralphie is dating his mother, Rosalie, now. They leave and make a stop for Richie to make a pickup but the dude is short and they get in a fight. Richie holds him while Jackie Jr. kicks his butt. Richie takes his wallet and gives a cut to Jackie Jr., who seems impressed.
** Johnny Sack moves to New Jersey and Tony comes by to see him and his wife. Johnny says his wife, Ginny, wanted to be closer to her sisters and they like the schools. Tony is concerned that Johnny Sack is going to be dipping into the Jersey market, but he says it’s just a better place to live.
** Tony is not pleased about Ralphie and Jackie Jr.’s beating and sits down with Ralphie about it. Tony tells him he’s appointing Gigi as captain instead of Ralphie. Ralphie is upset but Tony says this is business.
** Dr. Melfi tells Tony he’s ready to move on to behavior modification therapy. Tony gets mad, plays the victim card, and Melfi backs down saying she was just introducing the idea.
** Dr. Melfi is brutally attacked and raped in the garage/stairwell leaving her work. It’s an awful scene. They catch the guy across the street and her son, Jason, has an angry diatribe at the hospital.
** Dr. Melfi calls Tony’s house and tells Carmela she has to cancel Tony’s next appointment due to a car accident. He tells Carmela about Dr. Melfi wanting her to join therapy with him and she’s good with it.
** Turns out the rapist is let go because the police mishandled the chain of custody. Hmmm. How will Dr. Melfi get justice? Her husband, Richard, isn’t very supportive. They fight and Dr. Melfi gives him an FU as she walks out of the room.
** The crew at the Bada Bing is making fun of Ginny’s weight when Johnny Sack walks in. They shut up quick. Newark just got a $25 million grant to improve their riverfront and they all celebrate.
** Tony is upset with Christopher for getting Jackie Jr. involved in the mob life. He tells him he promised Jackie Sr., who was his best friend, that he wouldn’t let Jackie Jr. get involved. The FBI is listening as they talk in his basement. Tony tells Christopher he loves him.
** Dr. Melfi is back at work and meets with Tony. She’s using a cane to get around. She jumps when she drops the cane and Tony senses three may be more to this story. Dr. Melfi said behavioral therapy helps you control the triggers from your anger and depression. Tony: “Then how do you get people to do what you want?”
** Jackie Jr. comes over to borrow something from the Sopranos for his mother. Jackie Jr. wants to talk mob business but Tony shuts it down and tells him he promised his dad he would go to college. Meadow shows up, she’s very friendly with Jackie Jr., but still giving dad the cold shoulder.
** Dr. Melfi visits a sandwich shop called wrap nation and sees a picture of her attacker as the employee of the month. She drops her drink and hurries out.
** A couple of Russians visit Janice. They want Svetlana’s leg. She tries the “do you know who I am” line, and gets punched in the face. She gives them the leg.
** Dr. Melfi has a dream of being attacked again, but a Rottweiler comes to her defense and mauls her attacker. She talks to her therapist about it. She relates Tony to the Rottweiler. Dr. Melfi: “No feeling has ever been that sweet than to see that pig beg, plead and scream for his life because the justice system is f-ed up, Elliott.” But she says, “don’t worry, I’m not going to break the social contract … but there’s a certain satisfaction knowing I could have that asshole squashed like a bug if I wanted to.”
** Tony visits Janice in the hospital. She plays the sad, little victim. Tony is pissed he’s got to give payback to the Russians. Tony: “Every time I hear your voice on the phone, I know it’s going to cost me time, money. You never do anything to simplify my life.” Janice decides to devote her life to Christ. Tony is sick of her crap.
** Tony is at Johnny Sack’s for a house warming party. He sees Johnny Sack talking with Richie and seems a little concerned.
** Tony is back for another therapy session. He tells Dr. Melfi he’s open to going to behavioral therapy now, but she says no and breaks down crying. Tony tries to comfort her. She says it’s just her knee and wants Tony to continue. Tony: “Do you want to say something?” Dr. Melfi after a long pause: “No.” We fade to black.
