Season 3, Episode 11: Pine Barrens
In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 3, Episode 11: Pine Barrens. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** We open with G-L-O-R-I-A visiting Tony on his boat. He’s not there when she arrives and she takes a call from Irina, his former girlfriend, who thinks she left a medal on his boat. Gloria gets pissed and leaves abruptly.
** LOL, Paulie is getting his nails done. Tony calls and tells him to make a pickup for Silvio, whose got the flu. And we're off...
** Jackie Jr. is visiting with Meadow, who is sick. He wants some action, anyway but it’s a no from Meadow. Jackie leaves.
** Paulie and Christopher go for the pickup from a Russian named Valery. Paulie breaks his remote and they get in a fight. Paulie ends up smashing his windpipe and choking him to 'death.' They roll the 'body' in carpet and load it in the trunk.
** Tony and Gloria are back together. They’re enjoying each other in bed until Tony gets a call from Paulie. Tony is pissed. Gloria has to go but invites Tony for dinner. Paulie and Christopher decide to take the body to Pine Barrens, a nearby wildlife area.
** Tony is back meeting with Dr. Melfi. He tells her about seeing Gloria. He says they’re happy with each other. She asks if being with Gloria is good for his marriage. Tony says being with Gloria is better than therapy, prozac and all your shit combined.
** They arrive at Pine Barrens and it turns out the Valery is still alive. They take him out in the woods and make him dig his own grave. He knocks them both down with a shovel and takes off. They take about a dozen shots but finally wing him, but he still gets away. Tony calls but the reception isn’t good. Turns out, Paulie and Christopher are lost, they haven’t eaten and aren’t dressed for the bitter cold.
** Tony visits his Russian contact, Slava, to put more money in an overseas account and finds out Valery was a badass in the army and he and Slava are like “brothers.” Tony calls Paulie and Christopher again, tells them this guy can’t get away. They end up shooting a deer and Paulie loses his shoe.
** Meadow calls Jackie Jr., wants him to come over. He says he has to get his mother’s car inspected. She’s suspicious he’s doing it at night.
** It’s getting dark and Paulie and Christopher are starving and frozen. They find an abandoned van. They find some small ketchup and relish packages for dinner. Paulie calls Tony, the reception is still bad, and he tries to make it sound like its Christopher’s fault.
** Tony finally makes it to Gloria’s but he’s very late. She’s pissed that dinner is ruined. But they make up, for now.
** Paulie and Christoper are losing it. They’re arguing and blaming each other. They call Tony and beg him to come find them as Gloria is setting the table for dinner. Tony says he has to go and G-L-O-R-I-A loses it, throwing a steak at him. Tony turns and gives her a look and then walks out.
** Tony goes to Junior to get Bobby for some help, and Bobby shows up dressed in hunting gear including a bright orange vest. Tony about falls over laughing.
** Meadow gets a friend to drive her to Jackie Jr.’s place and they sit outside watching. Meadow start to feel guilty and is about to leave when Jackie Jr. walks out with another girl. She confronts him, says she loved him and to never call her again.
** Christoper sees Paulie having a tic tac and gets mad that he didn’t share. LOL Paulie said he just found them, didn’t know he had them on him. They end up getting in a fight and Christopher pulls his gun. Paulie: “All the shit we’ve been through, you really think I’d kill you?” Christopher: “I really do,” and then he breaks down laughing. They’re both stir crazy.
** It’s finally morning and Paulie and Christopher set off. They pick a direction and just head out. Paulie gets mad and shoots his shoe a few times, which Tony and Bobby hear and they finally find each other.
** They make it back but Paulie’s car is gone. Maybe Valery took it. Tony: “You got the money.” Paulie: “It was in the car.” Tony: “That’s all I asked you to do.” Paulie: “It couldn’t be helped. They guy f-ing lunged at us.” Christopher nods in the affirmative. Tony asks Paulie what he wants to do: “F it, let's go home.” They decide not to go look for Valery and his whereabouts is one of the enduring mysteries from the Sopranos series (but not the biggest).
** Tony meets with Dr. Melfi, complains about Gloria: “One minute she’s fine and the next minute she’s a f-ing lunatic … why does everything have to be so hard. I’m not saying I’m perfect but I do the right thing by my family. Doesn’t that count for anything?” Dr. Melfi says they need to discuss what attracted him to Gloria and Irina -- both depressive, unstable and impossible to please. “Does that remind you of any other woman?” We fade to black with some opera music.
