86 Days of The Sopranos
Season 3, Episode 10: To Save Us All from Satan’s Power
In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 3, Episode 10: To Save Us All from Satan’s Power. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** We open up with a Tony flashback to 1995. He’s down at the boardwalk with Jackie Sr. and Big P. Big P is complaining about the high cost of college and Tony warns him to stay away from that H. Big P looks at the waves and says he always wanted a beach house, “Maybe in the next life.”
** Paulie shows up and we’re back to the present at the boardwalk. Paulie tells Tony not to waste another second on that rat f*ck. Paulie is at odds with Ralphie over getting some extra cash out of a construction job.
** Tony wakes up having a panic attack. He visits Dr. Melfi and tells her he feels like he’s back to square one. He hasn’t been taking his medication every day. He feels a lot of pressure to get stuff done for Christmas. Tony tells her he had been thinking about a friend of his that was working with the federal government before his latest attack.
** Tony and Carmela show up at Janice’s house — she’s planning to cook Christmas dinner — but her place is a mess. Janice, who was just playing guitar, says her wrist hurts and she can’t clean. Carmela offers to clean up. Janice says her wrist may need surgery. Tony asks if that is from the Russians, then writes it down as a reminder in his notepad.
** The crew is getting out the Christmas stuff at the Bada Bing and come across the Santa suit that Big P always wore. The guys try to get Tony to wear it this year, but it’s a hard no.
** Tony visits the Russians. They are helping to hide his money in offshore accounts. Tony asks then for help finding the Russian who roughed up Janice. They offer to take care of him but Tony says,” This f*cker is mine.”
** Silvio has a nightmare about Big P and visits Tony. They go down in the basement and we have another flashback. Junior comes back from Boca for a sit down with Tony and Jackie Sr. at the Bada Bing. Big P arranged it and was supposed to be there but doesn’t show up until later. Big P explains his goomah’s mom was in the hospital. That’s when Tony and Silvio think he first met with the feds.
** The crew is at Artie’s restaurant and they see Charmaine there. They’re surprised to see her but it’s clear her and Artie still aren’t getting along. She makes a joke about the FBI that doesn’t go over well. We learn from Artie that sometimes they’re forced to work the same shift. Tony gets a call with info on the Russian.
** Tony and Furio get into the back of a cab that the Russian is driving wearing Santa hats and pretending to be drunk. We later learn he was found beaten under a Santa’s sleigh display at a sporting good store.
** Bobby drops off some toys at the Bada Bing and is immediately enlisted as Santa despite his reservations about being too shy.
** Tony sees Charmaine at the restaurant again and this time she goes off on him: “Look at what you’ve done to my husband.”
** They go back to the Bada Bing where Tony finds Jackie Jr. motor boating a dancer (Meadow had just told her mother Jackie Jr. had gone to the hospital to visit a friend). Tony takes Jackie Jr. in the bathroom and kicks his ass. Tony: “All I did was tell everyone what a good kid you are and all you did was hurt me.” Tony finds the 38, tells Jackie Jr. he's “bottomed out.”
** Tony tells Dr. Melfi about Jackie Jr. He feels responsible because his racist statements broke up Meadow’s previous relationship and sent her into Jackie Jr.’s arms. Dr. Melfi tries to bring up the deal with Big P and Tony just walks out without saying anything. Tony just can’t deal with it right now.
** As Bobby puts on the Santa suit, Tony has another flashback to when Big P showed up in the Santa suit. Big P was acting strange and Tony thinks he was wearing a wire then. We see him being a great Santa to the kids. Then we see Bobby as a Santa and he’s terrible. He even gets a, “F U, Santa,” from a little kid.
** It’s Christmas morning at the Soprano house. Jackie Jr. comes over and gives Meadow a necklace inscribed with, “I will always be true.” Tony looks miserable in the background. Jackie Jr. tells Tony he flunked out of Rutgers and he’s sorry. Tony says Jackie Jr. is FOS and he hasn’t decided what to do with him.
** Tony gives Carmela a sapphire bracelet to go with her ring. Then Meadow gives Tony a gift — it’s a Big Mouth Bass — OMG, dying. The look on Tony’s face is hilarious. The ghost of Big P continues to haunt him. Meadow makes him promise to put it on his desk. We fade to black as the Bass sings, Take Me to the River by the Talking Heads and then we get a gospel song as the waves roll in on the Jersey Shore.
