Season 1, Episode 13: I Dream of Jeannie Cusamano
In our 86 Days of The Sopranos we’re up to Season 1, Episode 13: I Dream of Jeannie Cusamano. Below are my impressions. Please provide your feedback in the replies, and try to avoid any big spoilers for those that are watching this iconic series for the first time…
** Tony get the OK to whack Jimmy from Junior. Christopher takes Jimmy to meet some Russian call girls, instead it’s Silvio’s gun in the back of the head. Jimmy’s body is later found with a rat stuffed in his mouth.
** Livia is taking her fake Alzheimers to a new level, showing up at the house, interrupting Meadow and her boyfriend and pretending Meadow is her dead sister.
** Dr. Melfi: “Isn’t it interesting that this memory loss has cropped up right after you failed to be killed in a carjacking. You think it was a carjacking?” Tony: “Of course not, but I’ve got an idea who was behind it, and enough said.”
** Dr. Melfi goes on about his mother potentially having borderline personality disorder and Tony loses it, jumping up and getting right in her face: “You twisted bitch, that’s my mother we’re talking about … We’re through, you and I, we’re finished, and you’re lucky I don’t break your face in 50 thousand pieces.” Dr. Melfi is so traumatized she locks the door behind Tony and shoves a chair against it.
** The FBI meets with Tony and plays tapes of his mother talking to Uncle Junior about Tony at Green Grove. He hears her manipulate Junior into putting the hit on Tony. Tony looks like he’s in shock.
** Artie visits Livia in the hospital, she’s faking Alzheimers but somehow remembers to mention Tony set the fire at Artie's old restaurant. She is a scourge on the Soprano family.
** Tony tells his crew that is was Junior. Things are being set in motion.
** Tony to Carmela: “What kind of person can I be where his own mother wants him dead … when I look at the guys now, all I feel is humiliation. I’ll take care of my uncle and I’ll take care of Mikey P, and I’ll get some satisfaction, but inside I’ll know.”
** Tony pulls a gun out of a big redfish and fills one of Junior's crew full of bullets. Him and Silvio take his boat out and presumably he’s now sleeping with the fishes.
** Tony visits Dr. Melfi, she’s scared and calls 911, but then agrees to sit down and talk. Tony: “One of the reasons they tried to have me clipped is because I’m seeing a shrink — you.” Tony tells Dr. Melfi she’s in danger because they don’t know that she can’t testify due to doctor-patient confidentiality. Dr. Melfi: “What should I do?” Tony: “Leave town, right now, today.” Dr. Melfi says she can’t, she has patients that are suicidal. Tony: “They’re not going to feel any better about their life if you get clipped.” Dr. Melfi: “Jesus F-ing Christ.”
** Tony says he’ll take care of these people and then she can come back. Dr. Melfi: “My God, people are going to get murdered, aren’t they?” Tony: “Don’t worry about those distractions, keep your eye on the ball.” Tony walks out: “You’ve been a good doctor to me, thank you.”
** Artie confronts Tony with a rifle in a parking lot. Tony talks him down. “My mother, God bless her, is going senile, Artie … I didn’t burn down your restaurant. I swear on my mother.” Oh, that scene was rich.
** Tony tells his crew he’s been seeing a psychiatrist. Paulie: “That’s not the worst thing I ever heard. I was seeing a therapist myself about a year ago. I had some issues, enough said.”
** Mikey goes for a run, but not before he calls his wife a “hoe.” It turns into a sprint through the woods when Christopher and Paulie show up. Mikey falls, Christoper shoots him in the leg. Paulie seems to be more worried about the poison ivy he ran into. “I can feel the itch on me already,” as him and Christopher unload their guns into Mikey.
** FBI arrests Uncle Junior and 13 others before Tony can get to him. Tony: “Talk about f-ing timing. He’s lucky he’s still alive.” Mikey’s wife appears on T.V. “He was trying out his new running shoes … he told me he loved me and would be right back.” LOL
** Tony is worried about the guys that got pinched turning state’s evidence. The FBI wants Junior to flip: “I want to F Angie Dickinson. Let’s see who gets lucky first.” More Junior: “My nephew running things? Not that strunz, not in this life.”
** Carmela is tired of Father Phil. She jealous of his relationship with Rosalie Aprille, and tells him that he manipulates sexually frustrated women.
** Tony walks into hospital. He grabs a pillow and looks ready to smother Livia, but she’s supposedly had a stroke and is being wheeled out on a stretcher. Tony gets in her face: “I heard the tapes, ma, the f-ing FBI tapes. Don’t tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about ... Uncle June is in jail now and I’ve got one last little detail I have to take care of … I tried to do the right thing by you and you tried to have me whacked … She’s smiling, look at the look on her face, she’s smiling … she’s got a f-ing smile on her face.” She sure does.
** Tony goes to see Dr. Melfi, the janitor tells him she’s on vacation. It’s storming bad. Tony is trying to drive family to his aunts. He stops at Artie’s restaurant. The whole crew is there. It’s now a mob spot, just like Charmaine didn’t want. Tony proposes a toast: “To my family. Someday soon you’re going to have families of your own, and if you’re lucky, you’ll remember the little moments like this that were good. Cheers.” The storm outside rages on (metaphor) as we fade to black.
