Except we check weather reports. And we both had vhf radios installed on our boats so we could communicate with the Coast Guard and other boats before we ever took them to Venice. Coast Guard puts out a weather/sea condition PSA on their channel every 15 minutes or so. Our radios tie into EPERBs as well. EPERBs communicate your last known location if it hits the water.
These folks left out of Empire which is just north of Venice. They were after red snapper in a 24 foot center console, 25 miles out in seas fueled by a 25-30 mph wind out of the North. That’s suicidal. Poking sharks in the eyes to keep them from eating you is not ideal.
